At an unannounced meeting with the US ambassador to the UN on Tuesday night, Nigerian authorities and intelligence agents in the field thwarted a jihadist plot to attack the UN headquarters in New York.
The terrorist organization Boko Haram, which has become a major terrorist threat to African countries, is demanding the return of hundreds of girls and women from the northeast of the country, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said in a statement. The UN Security Council on Wednesday passed two new sanctions on the group, including barring it from funding or recruiting international terror organizations.
The Boko Haram plot was revealed by a senior UN official, in a joint statement from the head of UN High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR and the heads of several other coun바카라사이트tries. The plot is connected to the November 2009 Boko Haram attack on a bus carrying Nigerian secu카지노 사이트rity guards in Abuja which killed 16. It is being investigated by the US military.
Nigeria is a UN member country and is at the heart of the UN response to the Boko Haram threat.
«The attacks yesterday [on the UN offices in New York] were the result of the intelligence gathering which led to the seizure of this item by the Nigerian authorities,» said one official, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak on the record.
The UN official declined to give further details.
Boko Haram has been identified as one of several terrorist groups operating in northern Nigeria. On September 13, at least seven people were killed and another 20 were 예스카지노wounded in another attack near the town of Gama.
