The government says that about 2 million tourists visit the centre each year, mostly for the annual Haj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Mukhtar Zia, president of the Mecca Tourism and Culture Commission, who is visiting the mosque today, described the attack as a «new challenge» and warned that security would be boosted in the days and weeks ahead.

But others believe the attack was a carefully crafted act of terrorism, which could have been intended to «sow fear» among Muslims around the world.

A suicide bombing targeted the entrance of the mosque on 28 November 2015 in the town of Taiz, in the south-western province of Daraa.

Islamic State said the attack in the city of Makkah wa호 게임s carried out by a group calling itself the Caliphate Army.

An IS video that the group posted online a couple of days later showed two young men running through the crowd during the attack.
