Inquiry into flood cyclone insurance issues with NBN Co, says Malcolm Turnbull in reply to questions on NBN Co flooding claims in May
As expected, Mr Turnbull said it appeared to be a government response to a political complaint.
He was referring to calls from the Coalition that NBN Co’s head, Craig Emerson, had misled NBN Co customers by falsely claiming the company had a flood insurance scheme in place for the Sandy weather.
A spokeswoman for the communications minister said Mr Emerson was under an internal investigation and NBN Co was working with the Department of Human Services.
The issue began in February when NBN Co announced a $10 million flood insurance guarantee to cover claims for up to $250,000 for people who lost their homes because of Hurricane Sandy.
The insurance company, however, has denied it was involved in the claim.
«There was no claim of any sort and no insurance claim was made by anyone at NBN Co or any of the subsidiaries that did make the claim,» NBN Co said in a statement on Friday.
But in March NBN Co told New Matilda it did not receive a flood insurance claim from anyone named in the NBN Co flood insurance policy on behalf of its customers.

The response says that although there is an internal inquiry to determine how the company acquired the flood insurance policy, the information cannot be disclosed until all inquiries have been completed.
It also says it will review the matter with the NSW and Australian governments «as a matter of urgency».
The statement also says: «NBN Co does not maintain any other forms of insurance coverage and does not provide a ‘for sale’ price as required by the Federal and State Insurance Laws.
«Insurance for Sandy claims must be paid using the NBN Co Flood Insurance Scheme and there is no policy with any other insurer.»
