For years now, critics of state prison privatization have argued that state control does little to relieve inmates of a heavy load of debt, which can eventually end up on the streets. But in the eyes of many state officials and critics, prisons are largely an empty building, in which a state prison population can rise in large part because there’s no need to invest as much money into prisons. That can lead to a loss of tax revenue and a deterioration in government effectiveness.
According to research done for the prison reform organization Americans for Public Justice (AFP), when states privatized prison system management in the 1990s, they cut costs in the form of reduced staffing levels and increased costs in the form of reduced spending on health, education, drug and mental health care. According to the Texas Tribune:
When private prisons become state-run, more than half of prisons are likely to have at least one staff member employed within state or federal prisons. And as a result, state correctional facilities will likely use more state funding for health and mental health care and reduced spending on police training.
In some cases, states have managed prison privatization to the benefit of private corporations at the expense of public employees, with the result that prisons now have more than 70 percent of their buildings reserved foSM 카지노r private companies. But in some cases privatization has led to the loss of public-sector jobs in some of the most vulnerable parts of communities—from public schools to public parks—or the loss of vital services.
But privatizers have also taken advantage of the financial crisis, which has led to high incarceration rates among the poor, which is a majo시흥출장마사지 시흥출장샵r concern전주안마 for prisoners and the rest of our communities. That means that states that use prison privatization as a way to make their economies thrive must keep up with this economic shift, if they want to maintain and improve their economies. They need to ensure that their businesses attract companies that are not only based in prisons, but that will expand as well. This includes ensuring that prison companies are able to attract companies that hire both inmates and prisoners.
