The Abbott Government has defended its decision to reject a scheme to give pensioners with shark bites a pension to help them cope with their situation.

It has told the ABC it was the Department of Human Services (DHS) that approved the application for funding by the Shark Victims’ Pension Service.

The NSW Government’s Shark Killer’s Pension Scheme was launched in 2014 and claims to help victims of shark attacks.

It claims to be «a system for assisting victims of shark attacks with post-traumatic stress disorder, a service of high priority to victims of shark attacks themselves».

The funding of the scheme came after reports of claims on social media by people who said they had been affected by sharks, resulting in the Shark Victim Pension Service being asked by the Department of Human Services to investigate.

The decision is also surprising given the $14 million in taxpayers’ money set aside in the budget to fight global warming.

Labor Opposition Leader Luke Foley said the Government was not playing fair.

The Government has told ABC the new funding decision was made by the Ministerial Advisory Committee on the Sharks.

It says it had approved a grant of more than $7 million over two years from the Department of Human Services for the Shark Victims’ Pension Service, which had been set up by then minister and then minister for veterans affairs, Nigel Scullion.
